Move to Folder

Keep common destinations one right-click away. Move to a saved folder, choose a destination each time, or use a Finder submenu of recent MenuSmith destinations.

  • Access: Free
  • Finder availability: Files & folders

See the Move to Folder overview and screenshots on the MenuSmith website.

Add and configure

  1. Open Action Library and find Move to Folder.
  2. Choose a starter configuration and add it to My Finder Menu.
  3. Select the new Menu Action and review its settings and availability rules in the Inspector.
  4. Run it from a matching Finder context.

Settings

  • Destination: Use Specific Folder, Ask Every Time, or Recent Folders.
  • Folder (Specific Folder only): Shows the selected folder’s full user-friendly path, such as ~/Work/Projects, /Volumes/Samsung T7/Projects, or /tmp/Projects. Long paths shorten in the middle to fit the Inspector; hover over the field to see the complete path.
  • Recent Folder Display (Recent Folders only): Smart is the default. Unique folder names appear on their own; matching names gain the shortest parent-path context needed to tell them apart. Full Path always shows the complete user-friendly path for every recent destination, including folders with unique names.
  • Folders Shown (Recent Folders only): Show 1–10 recent MenuSmith destinations; the default is 5.
  • Play Completion Sound: Play a sound when the Action completes successfully.

Starter configurations

  • Move to Recent Folder
  • Move to Folder
  • Move to Desktop
  • Move to Documents

Starter configurations set initial values only. Adding one does not permanently link the Menu Action to that starter.

What it can do

  • Use a specific destination
  • Choose a folder each time
  • Show up to ten recent MenuSmith destinations
  • Choose Smart folder labels or full destination paths
  • Keep both when the destination already has an item with the same name

Typical workflow

  1. Add a destination starter
  2. Choose or authorize its folder if needed
  3. Run it on selected Finder items

Important details

  • MenuSmith never overwrites a destination item.
  • A folder cannot be moved into itself or one of its descendants.
  • Items already in the destination are skipped.
  • Smart examples: ~/Work/Projects and ~/Personal/Projects appear as Projects — Work and Projects — Personal. If immediate parents also match, context expands outward one directory at a time. For example, Assets in /Volumes/SSD-A/Clients/Acme/Assets and /Volumes/SSD-B/Clients/Acme/Assets appears as Assets — SSD-A/Clients/Acme and Assets — SSD-B/Clients/Acme.
  • Smart compares only the recent destinations currently displayed. Unique names stay unchanged, even if a hidden destination has the same name.
  • Full paths use ~ for your home directory and retain external-volume context such as /Volumes/Samsung T7/Projects. Other locations, including /tmp/Projects, keep their full paths.
  • Recent Folder Display is saved separately for each Menu Action. Changing the display option changes labels only, not the selected destination or folder access.

If MenuSmith asks for access, review Authorized Folders. If the Action does not appear, check Finder Integration and the Menu Action's availability rules.
