Authorized Folders

macOS does not treat a Finder right-click as permission for another app to read or write every location. MenuSmith therefore asks you to authorize the folders needed by file-writing Actions.

Grant access

When an Action needs access, MenuSmith Action opens a standard macOS folder picker. Choose the requested folder and confirm. MenuSmith remembers the authorization and continues the Action. If you cancel, that request stops without granting access.

Authorizing a parent folder covers supported work inside that folder. Choose the narrowest practical location rather than a broad folder you do not need.

If access is needed again

Folder access is requested as part of running an Action; there is no Authorized Folders panel in Settings. If saved access is no longer valid, MenuSmith Action asks you to choose the folder again when it is needed.

For Actions such as Move to Folder and Copy to Folder, choose the destination in the Action's own workflow or Inspector as appropriate. A destination choice and permission to access that destination are separate requirements.

Exporting a setup does not transfer folder permissions to another Mac. Grant access there when an Action requests it.

Visibility and access

Settings > Advanced > Finder Visibility controls where the MenuSmith menu appears. Adding a visibility location does not authorize Actions to read or write that folder.

What authorization does not do

  • It does not grant Full Disk Access.
  • It does not upload file names, paths, or contents.
  • It does not run an Action automatically.
  • It does not back up files or undo changes made by Actions.

If an Action reports that access is missing, authorize the source and destination folders it names, then run the Action again.
