Settings

Select Settings in the MenuSmith sidebar to change how your menu appears, manage your setup, and find support tools. To change an individual Action's title, icon, availability, or options, select it in My Finder Menu and use the Inspector.

Jump to a section:

Finder Menu Behavior

Choose Finder placement to control where your configured menu appears when you right-click in Finder:

  • At Finder root: top-level Actions appear directly in Finder's shortcut menu. Your top-level groups become submenus. This is the default.
  • MenuSmith submenu: your entire configured menu appears inside one MenuSmith submenu.

Both options use the same Actions, groups, separators, and order from My Finder Menu. This setting changes placement; each Action still needs to match the current Finder context.

Finder Toolbar

The MenuSmith toolbar button provides another way to reach matching Actions from My Finder Menu.

To add or remove the button, open Finder and choose View > Customize Toolbar, then drag MenuSmith into or out of the toolbar.

Show Current Folder actions is on by default. When items are selected, it adds a Current Folder submenu with Actions that match the containing folder. Turn it off if you want the toolbar menu to focus on the selected items. Actions for the current folder remain available when no items are selected.

Toolbar entries follow each Menu Action's availability rules. Adding the toolbar button does not make every Action available for every selection.

Check your current access and purchase options here:

  • Choose Upgrade to Pro… to see the available plans when Pro is not active.
  • Choose Restore Purchases to check for a previous purchase made with the same Apple Account.
  • An active annual plan shows its renewal or expiry information and offers Manage Subscription….
  • An active lifetime purchase is identified as Lifetime and does not need subscription management.

See MenuSmith Pro for access and purchase details, or browse the Actions catalog to explore the available Actions. Local backups, restore, import, and export are available in Free.

Appearance

Choose System, Light, or Dark:

  • System follows the current macOS appearance and is the default.
  • Light keeps MenuSmith in Light appearance.
  • Dark keeps MenuSmith in Dark appearance.

This changes MenuSmith's appearance, without changing the macOS appearance setting.

Backups

Backups save your MenuSmith menu setup locally so you can return to an earlier configuration. They are available in Free and Pro. They do not back up the files you run Actions on or undo changes those Actions have made.

Create a manual backup

Choose Backup Now, optionally give the backup a name, then choose Create Backup. Manual backups appear under Manual Backups and are kept until you delete them.

Automatic safety backups

Automatic Safety Backups is on by default. When enabled, MenuSmith saves a safety copy before your first menu edit in an app session and before an import or restore replaces your current setup.

Use Automatic backups to keep to keep the last 5, 10, or 25 automatic backups. The default is 10. Older automatic backups are removed as needed; manual backups are unaffected.

Restore or delete a backup

Use a backup's Restore Backup button and review the confirmation before continuing. Restore replaces the current menu setup. When Automatic Safety Backups is on, MenuSmith backs up the current setup first. When it is off, the confirmation lets you restore with or without a safety backup.

The Delete Backup button removes that saved backup after confirmation. It does not remove your current menu or files created by Actions.

Restoring a backup does not grant a Pro purchase. Pro Actions remain locked unless Pro is active.

Import & Export

Use this section to save a portable copy of your setup or move it to another Mac.

Export your setup

Choose Export, select a save location, and save the .menusmith file. After a successful export, Show in Finder reveals the saved file.

The export includes your Actions, groups, separators, menu settings, custom titles and icons, Custom Script source, and stored file and folder templates. Folder authorizations and Mac-specific destination folder bindings are excluded. On another Mac, choose destination folders again for Actions configured to use a specific folder, and grant access when requested.

Import a setup

  1. Choose Import and select a MenuSmith configuration file. You can also double-click a .menusmith file in Finder.
  2. Review Import Preview, including any compatibility issues. If the file contains Custom Scripts, use Review Scripts to read them before importing.
  3. Choose Replace Current Setup to confirm. Import replaces your setup; it does not merge menus.

Opening a file or reviewing the preview does not replace your setup or run its scripts. If Automatic Safety Backups is enabled, MenuSmith backs up the current setup before replacing it. If the file requires a newer MenuSmith version, update the app before trying again.

Imported Pro Actions still require Pro. See Authorized Folders for access requests after importing.

Advanced

Finder Visibility

Open Settings > Advanced > Finder Visibility to choose where MenuSmith is available:

  • Everywhere on this Mac is the recommended default.
  • Specific locations limits availability to the folders you choose and their contents. Choose Add Location… to add a folder, or remove a location from the list.
  • Include external drives makes MenuSmith available on connected external drives and is on by default. In Specific locations mode, those drives are included in addition to the listed folders.
  • Restore Defaults returns to Everywhere on this Mac with external drives included. It keeps your saved specific locations for future use.

Visibility controls where the menu can appear. It does not authorize file access or override an Action's availability rules. MenuSmith asks for folder access when an Action needs it.

To enable the Finder extension itself, use Help > Getting Started from the MenuSmith menu bar. See Finder Integration for setup and troubleshooting.

Support & Diagnostics

Open Settings > Advanced > Support & Diagnostics when collecting information for support.

Log Level offers:

  • Standard: the default, with minimal sanitized failures and basic operational events.
  • Debug for 30 Minutes: temporarily adds more sanitized detail, then returns to Standard after 30 minutes or the next app launch, whichever comes first. It uses the same privacy protections.
  • Off: stops MenuSmith-authored support events. It does not delete existing logs or control diagnostics generated by macOS itself.

Choose Delete Diagnostic Logs to remove stored diagnostic logs after confirmation. Choose Export Diagnostics to save a sanitized report locally.

To prepare information for sharing:

  1. Choose Prepare Support Package… and review what will be included and excluded.
  2. Confirm to create a local ZIP containing a sanitized summary and recent support events.
  3. Choose Review Package to inspect it, Save Copy… to keep a copy, or Email Support… to open an email draft with the ZIP attached.

You choose the email recipient and send the message yourself. MenuSmith does not upload or send diagnostics automatically. If an email service is unavailable, save a copy and attach it yourself.

Diagnostics exclude file and folder names, full paths, file contents, clipboard contents, scripts, credentials, and purchase payloads. They are separate from configuration exports, which intentionally include your menu setup and scripts.
