Finder Integration

MenuSmith uses a Finder extension to read the current Finder context and present the matching menu.

Check extension status

Choose Help > Getting Started from the MenuSmith menu bar and continue to the Finder extension step. Choose Open System Settings if the extension is disabled, enable MenuSmith in the macOS window that opens, then return to the guide.

When MenuSmith detects a setup issue, an Enable… or Fix… button appears in its sidebar. Use that button to follow the relevant repair steps. There is no Finder Integration panel in Settings.

Choose where MenuSmith appears

Use Settings > Finder Menu Behavior to place Actions directly in Finder's shortcut menu or inside a MenuSmith submenu.

Use Settings > Advanced > Finder Visibility to choose Everywhere on this Mac or specific locations, and whether to include external drives. Visibility does not grant permission to read or write files.

For the optional MenuSmith toolbar button, see Finder Toolbar.

How availability works

A Menu Action can have more than one availability rule. It appears when any saved rule matches.

Rules keep these concepts separate:

  • Menu Context: selected items, folder background, sidebar, or toolbar.
  • Selection Requirements: a single file, multiple files, a single folder, multiple folders, or files & folders.
  • File Type Requirements: PDF, image, Markdown, or another supported type.

A folder background is a context, not a selected folder. If an Action should work in both cases, include rules for both contexts.

Refresh Finder

Configuration changes normally appear automatically. If Finder still shows an old menu, close and reopen the Finder window, then check the extension status again.
