Getting Started¶
1. Open MenuSmith¶
Open MenuSmith after installation. The app manages your menu configuration; it does not need to remain open for the menu to appear in Finder. MenuSmith requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
2. Enable the Finder extension¶
MenuSmith's welcome guide helps you enable its Finder extension. To open the guide again, choose Help > Getting Started from the MenuSmith menu bar, then continue to the Finder extension step.
Choose Open System Settings if the extension is disabled, then enable MenuSmith in the macOS window that opens. Return to the guide and continue once it confirms that MenuSmith is enabled. macOS controls the extension switch. If MenuSmith shows an Enable… or Fix… button in its sidebar, you can also use it to resolve the reported setup issue.
After enabling the extension, open a Finder window and right-click a file, folder, or empty folder background. MenuSmith appears only when at least one saved Menu Action matches that context.
3. Add an Action¶
- Open Action Library in MenuSmith.
- Choose an Action or one of its starter configurations.
- Select Add to My Finder Menu.
- Open My Finder Menu to arrange or customize it.
A starter configuration sets initial options only. After you add it, the Menu Action is independent and can be edited in the Inspector.
4. Arrange the menu¶
Drag Actions to reorder them. Add groups and separators when you want structure. Select an item to edit its custom title, icon, Finder availability, and Action-specific settings.
5. Run it from Finder¶
Right-click a matching file, folder, selection, or folder background. Choose the Action directly, or open the MenuSmith submenu first if you selected that placement. An Action that writes files may ask you to authorize a folder before its first run there.
Next: Customize My Finder Menu or review Settings for menu placement, the Finder toolbar, backups, and other preferences.
