Custom Script

Create your own Finder Action with zsh, AppleScript, or JavaScript for Automation. MenuSmith passes structured selection context without inserting paths into your source code.

  • Access: MenuSmith Pro
  • Finder availability: Configurable Finder context

See the Custom Script overview and screenshots on the MenuSmith website.

Add and configure

  1. Open Action Library and find Custom Script.
  2. Choose a starter configuration and add it to My Finder Menu.
  3. Select the new Menu Action and review its settings and availability rules in the Inspector.
  4. Run it from a matching Finder context.

Settings

  • Script Type
  • Script Source
  • Run Context
  • Maximum Selected Items
  • Multiple Selection Behavior

Starter configurations

  • Run zsh
  • Run AppleScript
  • Run JXA

Starter configurations set initial values only. Adding one does not permanently link the Menu Action to that starter.

What it can do

  • Choose zsh, AppleScript, or JXA
  • Run on a folder background or selected files and folders
  • Run once for all selected paths or once per item
  • Limit each Action to a safe maximum selection count

Typical workflow

  1. Choose a script language
  2. Paste or write your own source and choose its Finder context
  3. Enable the Menu Action when it is ready

Important details

  • New Custom Script Actions stay disabled until source is provided.
  • The feature runs only scripts you author; MenuSmith does not download or install script packs.
  • The current maximum selection limit is 500 items, with a conservative default of 50.

If MenuSmith asks for access, review Authorized Folders. If the Action does not appear, check Finder Integration and the Menu Action's availability rules.
