Create Desktop Shortcut

Bring a familiar shortcut workflow to the Mac. MenuSmith creates real Finder aliases on the Desktop for selected items or the current Finder folder, without copying the original or creating a symbolic link.

  • Access: Free
  • Finder availability: Files & folders, Folder background

See the Create Desktop Shortcut overview and screenshots on the MenuSmith website.

Add and configure

  1. Open Action Library and find Create Desktop Shortcut.
  2. Choose a starter configuration and add it to My Finder Menu.
  3. Select the new Menu Action and review its settings and availability rules in the Inspector.
  4. Run it from a matching Finder context.

Settings

  • Play Completion Sound

Starter configurations

  • Create Desktop Shortcut

Starter configurations set initial values only. Adding one does not permanently link the Menu Action to that starter.

What it can do

  • Works with files, folders, applications, and multiple selections
  • Creates real Finder aliases
  • Keeps existing Desktop items and chooses a numbered name
  • Optional completion sound

Typical workflow

  1. Add Create Desktop Shortcut
  2. Select Finder items or right-click a folder background
  3. Run the Action

Important details

  • Desktop and source folders must be covered by Authorized Folders.
  • An existing alias is resolved to its original item before a new Desktop alias is created.

If MenuSmith asks for access, review Authorized Folders. If the Action does not appear, check Finder Integration and the Menu Action's availability rules.
