Auto Crop Image

Trim empty edges from one or many images without opening an editor. MenuSmith detects transparent borders or a uniform background and writes cropped copies.

  • Access: Free
  • Finder availability: PNG, JPEG, HEIC/HEIF, TIFF, WebP

See the Auto Crop Image overview and screenshots on the MenuSmith website.

Add and configure

  1. Open Action Library and find Auto Crop Image.
  2. Choose a starter configuration and add it to My Finder Menu.
  3. Select the new Menu Action and review its settings and availability rules in the Inspector.
  4. Run it from a matching Finder context.

Settings

  • Detection — Automatic (default), Transparent Borders, or Uniform Background.
  • Color Tolerance — Exact, Balanced (default), or Flexible. Available with Automatic and Uniform Background; it has no effect on Transparent Borders.

Starter configurations

  • Auto Crop Image

Starter configurations set initial values only. Adding one does not permanently link the Menu Action to that starter.

What it can do

  • Detect transparent borders
  • Detect uniform backgrounds
  • Choose how closely border colors must match
  • Process multiple selected images
  • Skip images with no removable border

Typical workflow

  1. Add Auto Crop Image
  2. Choose automatic, transparent, or uniform-background detection
  3. For uniform backgrounds, keep Balanced or choose Exact or Flexible color tolerance
  4. Run it on selected images

Important details

  • Appears only when every selected item is a supported image file. Folders and unsupported file types prevent the Action from appearing.
  • The single starter uses Automatic detection and Balanced color tolerance.
  • Exact requires an identical background color. Balanced allows slight variation. Flexible includes more similar shades and may crop subtle borders.
  • If a pale gray border is cropped along with a white background, use Balanced or Exact instead of Flexible.
  • Color Tolerance applies only when detecting a uniform background; transparent-border detection always preserves every pixel that is not fully transparent.
  • Images with no removable border are left unchanged.
  • Animated and multi-image files are not supported.

If MenuSmith asks for access, review Authorized Folders. If the Action does not appear, check Finder Integration and the Menu Action's availability rules.
