Open with App¶
Give your favorite apps a permanent place in Finder’s right-click menu. Choose an installed Mac app, then decide which files and folders should show its Action.
- Access: Free
- Finder availability: Files & folders matching your settings, Folder background when Include Folders is enabled
See the Open with App overview and screenshots on the MenuSmith website.
Add and configure¶
- Open Action Library and find Open with App.
- Choose a starter configuration and add it to My Finder Menu.
- Select the new Menu Action and review its settings and availability rules in the Inspector.
- Run it from a matching Finder context.
Settings¶
- Application
- Applies To: All Files or Specific File Types
- File Types
- Include Folders
- Use App Defaults…
Starter configurations¶
- Open with Visual Studio Code
- Open with VLC
- Open with Photoshop
- Open with Adobe Acrobat
- Open with Google Chrome
Starter configurations set initial values only. Adding one does not permanently link the Menu Action to that starter.
What it can do¶
- Choose or drop an installed .app in the Inspector
- Create separate Menu Actions for different apps
- Allow all files or specific file types, with optional folder support
- Review and apply the app’s declared file types with Use App Defaults…
Typical workflow¶
- Add an app starter from Action Library
- Choose the application and review Applies To in the Inspector
- Right-click matching Finder items or a supported folder background and run the Action
Important details¶
- The chosen application must be installed; choose it again if MenuSmith cannot find it.
- Declared app defaults may not include every format the app can open. You can adjust the file types yourself.
- MenuSmith requires Authorized Folder access before handing items to the selected app.
If MenuSmith asks for access, review Authorized Folders. If the Action does not appear, check Finder Integration and the Menu Action's availability rules.
