New File from Template

Turn a file you use repeatedly into a Finder Action. Right-click one or more folders, or empty space inside a folder, and MenuSmith creates a fresh copy with safe automatic naming.

  • Access: MenuSmith Pro
  • Finder availability: Folders, Folder background

See the New File from Template overview and screenshots on the MenuSmith website.

Add and configure

  1. Open Action Library and find New File from Template.
  2. Choose a starter configuration and add it to My Finder Menu.
  3. Select the new Menu Action and review its settings and availability rules in the Inspector.
  4. Run it from a matching Finder context.

Settings

  • Created File Name
  • Template File
  • Open With

Starter configurations

  • New Text File
  • New README.md File
  • New Markdown File
  • New Rich Text Document
  • New Pages Document
  • New Keynote Presentation
  • New Numbers Spreadsheet
  • New Word Document
  • New PowerPoint Presentation
  • New Excel Spreadsheet
  • New HTML File
  • New Shell Script

Starter configurations set initial values only. Adding one does not permanently link the Menu Action to that starter.

What it can do

  • Use any stored file as the reusable template
  • Choose the name created by each Menu Action
  • Open and edit the private template copy in its default app
  • Create one copy in every selected folder without overwriting existing items

Typical workflow

  1. Add a file starter from the Action Library
  2. Edit the stored template and output name
  3. Right-click one or more folders or a folder background in Finder

Important details

  • MenuSmith asks for an Authorized Folder before writing where access has not been granted.
  • The source template is copied into MenuSmith; later changes to the original file do not change the Menu Action.

If MenuSmith asks for access, review Authorized Folders. If the Action does not appear, check Finder Integration and the Menu Action's availability rules.
