Find Duplicate Files

Scan one or more folders for verified content matches, choose which copies to keep, and review every item marked for Trash before anything moves.

  • Access: MenuSmith Pro
  • Finder availability: Single folder, Multiple folders, Folder background

See the Find Duplicate Files overview and screenshots on the MenuSmith website.

Add and configure

  1. Open Action Library and find Find Duplicate Files.
  2. Choose a starter configuration and add it to My Finder Menu.
  3. Select the new Menu Action and review its settings and availability rules in the Inspector.
  4. Run it from a matching Finder context.

Settings

  • Minimum File Size
  • Search Subfolders
  • Include Hidden Files

Starter configurations

  • Standard
  • Large Duplicates
  • This Folder Only
  • Thorough

Starter configurations set initial values only. Adding one does not permanently link the Menu Action to that starter.

What it can do

  • Verify duplicates by file contents, not filenames
  • Filter by minimum file size and subfolder depth
  • Auto-mark extra copies using clear keep rules
  • Keep at least one copy in every group

Typical workflow

  1. Start a scan from one or more Finder folders
  2. Review groups as verified matches appear
  3. Mark extra copies, review them, then confirm Trash

Important details

  • Nothing moves until you review and confirm the marked files.
  • .DS_Store files are always excluded, even when hidden files are included.
  • Files changed after the scan are not moved without a refresh.

If MenuSmith asks for access, review Authorized Folders. If the Action does not appear, check Finder Integration and the Menu Action's availability rules.
